Sparkling Across America: Florida

SAA-FloridaWe’re warming up from this New England winter weather with a Sparkling Across America stop in Florida to chat with Jennifer Rand of Belle de Couture. Always proud to rock the Seminole style, she is a vintage lover with an eclectic style that mixes vintage classics with on-trend designer looks. We loved getting to chat with her about her style inspiration, her favorite vintage finds, and of course, Florida style! Read on for the whole story.

Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you begin blogging? belle_de_couture

I’m 28 years old, I have a wonderful husband and a beautiful daughter (who will be 1 next month), and I have an addiction to vintage as well as shoes! I started my blog back in May of 2010 in an effort to keep a style diary of my vintage and thrift clothing. My girlfriends always would tell me that they would never be able to pull off the outfits I wore. I wanted a blog that would inspire girls to step outside of the box, and give thrift and vintage clothing a chance. It’s amazing the gems I’ve discovered while visiting a thrift or consignment store — it’s like treasure hunting. I love mixing my thrift finds with department store or designer pieces.

Describe your style in 3 words.

Eclectic.  Fresh.  Fun.

Where do you get your style inspiration?

My Grandmother, Marjorie Farren, is who I get my fashion sense from. She has amazing style – bold, bright, colorful – and is never afraid to wear something that’s eye-catching. I definitely picked up on that as a little girl, and my style still holds true to that today. We both are drawn to amazing prints and clothing with colorful accents. Unique jewelry too!

What do you like best about living in Florida?

I think what I love most about Florida is the beautiful beaches. I just love swimming in the ocean and taking the boat out to the sandbar during the summer. Sipping cocktails by the harbor while watching the sunset is another thing I just love to do.

Do you notice any regional trends that may not be as prevalent in other areas?

Well, we definitely have a lot of southern prep in FL. And, I have to say as much as I love to style edgy, bohemian, and chic outfits – I will always love a great pair of boat shoes, a classic oxford, and my David Yurman bangles.

How does Florida weather affect or influence your style?

Because the weather in Florida is a lot milder than other states on the east coast, we can definitely get away with short sleeves into the fall and winter months. We tend to have a lot of Indian summers where we are in 80 degree weather even during Christmas time. Some may envy this, but it’s a pain when all you want to do is wear your suede OTK boots and a nice chunky knit without sweating!

You have a love for vintage. What is your favorite vintage piece you own and why?

I think I have to pick two favorites (and really that’s hard to do because I adore my entire vintage collection) – my Grandmother’s leopard clutch and my Chanel chain belt. My Grandmother gifted me her leopard clutch years ago. It is over 60 years old and has real fur and the most amazing leopard print. Since it belonged to her, it makes it extra special. My vintage Chanel chain belt was seriously one of the best vintage finds I’ve ever had! I scored it while thrifting at a Goodwill in Venice, FL about three years ago and would you believe it was only $1.99??? And yes, it’s authentic. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I’m always amazed at the things that people will give away. Their loss is my gain though! 🙂

What is at the top of your holiday wishlist?

A new pair of classic ballet flats – most likely Tory Burch (her flats are so chic and last so long).

What is one of the biggest trends you predict to see this winter?

OTK (Over The Knee) boots are everywhere right now! Be it flat or with a heel these boots are in full force. I love how you can pair them with distressed cut-off shorts, a pair of skinny jeans, or an asymmetrical skirt. They are incredibly versatile.

What do you look for in a piece of jewelry?

I think the most important quality that a nice piece of jewelry should have is that it doesn’t discolor. My biggest pet peeve is when I wear a ring that is gold plated and the gold rubs off and turns my finger green! Another important thing I look for is if it’s classic. Sure, I love a great stand-out trendy piece, but as I get older (and smarter with my purchases) I think it’s much more important to invest in jewelry that is classic and can stand the test of time. If you plan on purchasing jewelry that is unique and not so classic, it’s best not to spend so much money on it because once the trend is over you probably won’t be wearing it anymore.

What is your favorite piece from right now? angelina_jolie_emerald_earrings

My favorite piece from Eves Addiction right now is the Angelina Jolie Inspired Pear Drop Emerald CZ Earrings. I love a great statement earring and green is my favorite color, so these earrings are love at first sight! I would wear these to work with chic business attire, out to dinner or cocktails with my husband and friends, or during the holidays when I get really dressed up!
